Ice Climbing with Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve
Ice climbing is similar to rock climbing, but you climb an ice wall instead of rocky surfaces. This can be a challenging activity to learn independently, so going out with a guide like those at Haliburton Forest is one of the safest ways to get started. Please note that this activity is physically demanding and requires a good fitness level.
No experience is necessary for the Into to Ice Climbing tour. Your guide will provide everything you need to get started, including the required gear, like climbing boots, crampons, helmets, harnesses, and ice tools. Once you have geared up, your guide will give a thorough safety demonstration before you start climbing on your own.
Be Prepared for Your Ice Climbing Adventure
When packing for your winter visit, make sure you have the right clothing for ice climbing:
- Wool socks
- Winter boots
- Base layer
- Mid-layer like fleece or down-insulated clothing
- Outer jacket
- Light winter hat to fit under the helmet
- Mittens or gloves

They also recommend bringing a day pack with spare clothes, snacks, and water to keep you hydrated. Keep in mind that this activity is weather- and condition-dependent, so some tours may be rescheduled or canceled.
