Birding Spots in the Haliburton Highlands
One of the best aspects of birdwatching is its simplicity. You don’t need any special equipment; all you need is a sense of adventure and a bit of patience. Visit these popular birding hotspots and check the eBird website to see what birds have been spotted recently:
Haliburton County Rail Trail
The Haliburton County Rail Trail is one of the most popular spots for birdwatching in the region. Bike or hike through the diverse habitats of the trail and encounter a wide variety of species, including Red-winged Blackbirds, Swamp Sparrows, American Bitterns, Trumpeter Swans, and Wood Ducks.
Ritchie Falls Loop
Ritchie Falls is not only a scenic sightseeing destination- it’s also a great place to see birds that frequent grassland habitats. Drive slowly along Ritchie Falls Road and scan the open fields for Eastern Meadowlark, Bobolink, Eastern Bluebird, American Kestrel, and Sandhill Cranes. As you continue driving towards the falls, you will pass Lochlin Creek bog, where even more birds can be spotted.
Horseshoe Lake Wetland
Head to the east end of Horseshoe Lake in Minden Hills to spot a wide variety of waterfowl in the wetlands habitat. Some common birds found here include rails, bitterns, Marsh Wrens, herons, nesting ducks, and grebes.
Guided Birding Walks
If you’re interested in birding with a group, several organizations offer guided birding walks. Many of these events occur in the springtime, but options are available year-round. Check the event calendar for Haliburton Highlands Land Trust and Friends of the Rail Trail to see if there are any guided birding walks available during your stay.
Yours Outdoors also hosts a monthly Wings & Wolves Experience, where you can see and learn about the American Kestrel, Peregrine hybrid, Gyrfalcon, Red-tailed hawk, and Harris’ hawk from a local falconry educator.
