Where to See Ontario Wildlife: Haliburton Highlands

The Haliburton Highlands are an oasis of relaxation. The sights and sounds of nature greet you at every turn, and there are countless activities and attractions to fill your spare hours. Sir Sam’s Inn & Spa is a secluded getaway in the heart of Canada’s Haliburton Highlands, surrounded by the unbridled beauty of nature. While you can see lumbering giants and furry critters right outside your luxurious hotel room, there are plenty of other incredible places to see Ontario wildlife in our region. The Haliburton Forest & Wildlife Reserve is the best animal sanctuary in Ontario for visitors who want to get outside and observe nature.

Ontario Wildlife at the Haliburton Wolf Centre

One of the most popular parts of the Haliburton Forest & Wildlife Reserve is the Haliburton Wolf Centre. It’s a learning facility dedicated to the local canines. You can watch movies and listen to lectures on the wolves in Ontario, and if you’re lucky, you’ll see them come right up to the glass of the observatory. The resident wolf pack has lived in the Haliburton Forest since 1993! However, if they don’t approach the window, don’t worry—live webcams show different views of the forest. The staff feeds the wolves at this animal sanctuary in Ontario to keep them happy and healthy year-round.

When the sun sets in the summer, you can get out of the observation facility and into the field with the Wolf Howl Experience. On this evening walk through the woods, you’ll call out to the wolves in Ontario in hopes of hearing a response.

Walking with Wild Animals in Ontario

The Haliburton Forest & Wildlife Preserve has tons of different animals besides wolves. You can see groundhogs, red foxes, snowshoe hares, deer, moose, and many more wild animals in Ontario while exploring the gorgeous wooded trails. While you can go hiking solo in the Haliburton Forest, they also offer some awesome guided experiences, including canopy tours. Expert canopy tour guides will teach you how to spot and identify the many birds fluttering among the trees. They’ll also point out any other Ontario wildlife you encounter. Since their facilities are only 30 minutes away from Sir Sam’s Inn, you’ll likely see some of the same creatures when you return to your home away from home.

It’s worth mentioning that the barn has pigs in the summer. They’re not technically considered Ontario wildlife, but they sure are cute!
